"Auroras are associated with the largest solar storm events, and this is the first time scientists have been able to document a sudden-onset substorm in response to the largest solar storm," Lee said in the news release. This suggests that this substorm may be more common during the largest events." The researchers discovered that the magnetic cloud of the 1859 storm formed in the three hours after the intense solar flare began.
